Moving to the Netherlands

If you are planning to move to the Netherlands, it is important to understand what tax obligations you may encounter. Especially if you are unfamiliar with the Dutch tax system, this may seem like a daunting task. If you intend to apply for the 30%-ruling, the timing of your immigration can be particularly important.

Moving to the Netherlands

When you immigrate to the Netherlands, you should register with the local municipality (‘gemeente’). The Tax Office is then automatically notified of your arrival in the Netherlands, and you will receive your BSN (citizen service number). In the following year, you will need to submit a tax return for the previous year, using the M-form, which is specifically designed for immigration situations. The form is complex, and mistakes are commonly made.

We are happy to assist you in filing your M-form, ensuring that you are fully compliant while making sure you don’t miss any potential refunds.

Below are a few examples of situations we can advise on:

  • You are moving to the Netherlands and want to know if you can continue working for your foreign employer;
  • You are planning your move to The Netherlands and would like guidance on structuring and timing it, as well as assistance with filing the M-form in due course;
  • You are moving to the Netherlands and would like to obtain the 30%-ruling
  • You have moved to the Netherlands and are looking into buying a house

How we work

We provide clear insight into your tax obligations after moving to the Netherlands, and help you navigate the often complex Dutch tax system. We can assist with filing your M-form as well ongoing annual tax returns.

We provide a comprehensive service, tailored to your personal tax situation. This means we do more than simply prepare and submit your tax return(s). Our fee includes a thorough review of your tax position to ensure you are fully compliant and not overlooking any optimisation possibilities. We carefully assess all applicable deductions and reliefs, including but not limited to alimony payments, charitable donations, medical expenses, and mortgage interest.  Additionally, we proactively review upcoming changes for the coming tax years and advise you on any potential impact.

Throughout the process, we provide proactive, tailored tax advice and remain available to answer any tax-related questions you may have.

The importance of hiring an international tax advisor

If you are leaving the Netherlands, you will want to know for certain that your taxes are filed correctly, as you must be compliant. The Tax Office can impose high penalties if your affairs aren’t in order.

At our office you can be certain that you will be supported by experienced advisors and  who will provide you with relevant tax advice. If you are leaving the Netherlands and your family is to follow, we can advise you on double taxation relief possibilities.

We will file and optimalise your M-form and you won’t miss out on tax refunds. Or if you intend to retire and leave the Netherlands, we can advise you on the best time tax-wise.
