Expat tax Netherlands

If you live in the Netherlands you will generally be required to file an income tax return. Mistakes are common, and can lead to missed refund opportunities or unexpected tax assessments. If you own assets abroad, such as property or investment accounts, these should be declared in your tax return (unless you qualify for an exemption). Even without a formal invitation from the Tax Office, submitting a tax return could still be necessary.

Tax return Netherlands

Dutch tax rules can be complex, and dealing with the Tax Office is not always straightforward. We can assist you in ensuring that your tax file is both compliant and optimised, while keeping your tax affairs fully up to date. Furthermore, we can take care of all communication with the tax inspector on your behalf.

In practice, low-cost tax return services often focus on speed and standardisation. While that may appear efficient, important opportunities are easily overlooked—especially in more complex international cases.

These are the kind of requests we receive on a regular basis:

  • I have recently moved to the Netherlands and I don’t want to miss out on tax deductions, could you file my tax return for me?
  • I live in The Netherlands and I have assets abroad, however I have never declared these in my Dutch tax returns, can you help me?
  • I have income from the Netherlands but I moved to a different country last year;
  • I need to apply for mortgage relief and want to request a provisional refund; (which results in a monthly refund instead of a lump sum after the end of the year).
  • I want to make sure my tax return is being optimised and no exemptions are being missed;
  • I was expecting to receive a sizeable refund; instead, I have received a tax assessment with a due amount;
  • I need to file an M-form and don’t want to miss any important deductions, tax credits and allowances.
  • I work in Dubai but I live in the Netherlands

We carefully assess all applicable deductions and reliefs, including but not limited to alimony payments, charitable donations, medical expenses, and mortgage interest.  Additionally, we proactively review upcoming changes for the next tax year and advise you on any potential impact.

We will prepare and file your tax return and, where appropriate, request a provisional assessment. Throughout the process, we provide proactive, tailored tax advice and remain available to answer any tax-related questions you may have. Should you leave the country in future, we can assist you to ensure a smooth departure.

The importance of hiring an international tax advisor

If you need to file a tax return in The Netherlands, you will want to know for certain that what you are doing is done correctly, as you must be compliant. The Tax Office can impose high penalties if your affairs aren’t in order and correctly presented.

At our office you can be certain that you will be supported by experienced advisors and who will provide you with relevant tax advice. If you let us take care of your tax return, we will request an extension until May 1st of the next year. We will carefully consider all deductions, including alimony, charitable contributions, and unreimbursed health expenses, to ensure nothing is missed.

You will be advised of your personal tax saving possiblities. Or if your tax return was filed by your employer we can give you a second opinion.  In the most diverse circumstances we are committed to providing complete tax advice. Most of all, we will make sure that you are tax and social security compliant in particular in cross-border situations.
